How Trauma Affects the Brain
When we experience a traumatic event, the brain shifts into survival mode. Several key brain regions become involved:
The Amygdala: The Brain's Alarm System
The amygdala detects potential danger and activates the body's fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response. During trauma, it becomes highly active, releasing stress hormones that prepare the body to survive.
After trauma, the amygdala can remain overly sensitive, causing the brain to react to reminders of the event as though the danger is still present.
The Hippocampus: The Memory Organizer
The hippocampus helps organize memories by placing them in context—where they happened, when they happened, and recognizing that they are in the past.
Traumatic stress can disrupt this process. Instead of becoming an organized memory, the experience may remain fragmented and disconnected from a sense of time. This is one reason traumatic memories can feel as though they're happening in the present rather than being remembered as events from the past.
The Prefrontal Cortex: The Thinking Brain
The prefrontal cortex is responsible for reasoning, decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation.
During trauma, activity in this part of the brain often decreases while the survival centers become more active. This makes it difficult to think clearly, regulate emotions, or accurately assess whether a situation is truly dangerous.
Why Trauma Feels "Stuck"
Under normal circumstances, the brain naturally processes experiences and stores them as memories.
Trauma can interrupt this process.
Instead of being fully integrated, traumatic memories may remain linked to the emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs experienced during the event. Later, reminders can reactivate the same fear, shame, or helplessness, even when there is no actual threat.
This is why trauma survivors often say, "I know I'm safe, but my body doesn't feel safe."
How EMDR Supports the Brain's Natural Healing Process
EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which proposes that the brain is naturally wired to process difficult experiences. Trauma can interrupt this process, leaving memories inadequately processed.
During EMDR, clients briefly recall distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, alternating taps, or auditory tones.
Researchers believe this process helps reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories while allowing the brain to integrate them more adaptively. As memories are reprocessed, they become less likely to trigger overwhelming emotional and physical reactions.
What Happens After Reprocessing?
As traumatic memories become integrated, many people notice:
Less emotional distress when recalling the event
Reduced anxiety and hypervigilance
Fewer intrusive memories or flashbacks
Improved emotional regulation
Healthier beliefs about themselves and the world
A greater sense of safety in everyday life
The memory itself does not disappear. Instead, it becomes part of your life story without continuing to activate your nervous system as though the trauma is happening in the present.
What Does the Research Show?
EMDR is one of the most extensively researched treatments for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Brain imaging studies suggest that successful EMDR treatment is associated with changes in activity within brain regions involved in fear, memory, and emotional regulation. Although researchers continue to investigate the precise neurological mechanisms, the evidence consistently supports EMDR as an effective treatment for helping people recover from traumatic experiences.
Healing doesn't mean forgetting the past—it means helping your brain recognize that the trauma is over so you can move forward with greater resilience and emotional freedom.
